Quora answer: “How can I get the full Google Assistant in my Android 6.0.1 Samsung phone?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

How can I get the full Google Assistant in my Android 6.0.1 Samsung phone?

Answer:

========

First, you will need to change the location of your device to US and the device language to English (US). Then, you will need to open the Google app and go to settings and ensure that the language is set to English (US).

Then go to the Play store and install the latest updates for the Google app. Note that it does take a couple of days for Assistant to be installed.

After a couple of days have elapsed, you should be able to press and hold the home button and Assistant will pop up, prompting you to train it your voice for “OK Google” detection. After the setup is complete you should be able to use Assistant.

Quora answer: “Is the Mac OS kernel the same as the Linux kernel? What is the difference?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

Is the Mac OS kernel the same as the Linux kernel? What is the difference?

Answer:

========

The macOS kernel is called Darwin, which is based off of FreeBSD. FreeBSD and Linux are both UNIX-like operating systems, however FreeBSD is more “Unixy” than Linux because the roots of BSD are in the original AT&T Unix. GNU/Linux on the other hand uses GNU components so they aren’t Unix, per se. Fun fact, GNU actually stands for “Gnu is not Unix”.

Another major difference in between Linux and BSD are the licensing. The GNU GPL License allows you to modify and redistribute the source code, however you should release the code back to open source. BSD Licence on the other hand allows you to modify and redistribute the code, but leaves the choice on the user whether to keep it closed source or open source. There is a saying in the Unix community that the BSD License is “so free that it allows you to make the code non-free”.

That is how Apple managed to use BSD code and get away with making it closed-source.

Quora answer: “Should I install Linux as my “main” OS?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

Should I install Linux as my “main” OS?

Answer:

========

It depends on what you use your computer for. If you use it for programming, and programming alone, then you won’t notice the lack of Windows. In fact, things will be easier on Linux.

However, if you have a multipurpose computer, and you do things like graphic design, video editing, gaming, etc., then I wouldn’t recommend going for Linux as your main OS.

Instead, you could either 1) run Linux in a virtual machine, or 2) use the Windows Subsystem for Linux (also known as “Bash on Ubuntu on Windows”).

Personally, I recommend the 2nd option as opposed to a virtual machine, because after a few days, you will notice that the virtual machine can really start to slow you down. Talking from experience.

With the WSL (short for Windows Subsystem for Linux) however, you have a working Ubuntu installation (terminal only) that works and integrates seamlessly with your Windows system. You can access all of your files etc. the same way you would with cmd or powershell, as opposed to a virtual machine where files in your virtual machine and your host machine are separate, and have no way of sharing with each other. And it is relatively simple to use and officially developed by Microsoft and Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) to provide the best experience.

Also, please do not ever try to use Kali as your main Linux distro. Kali is a specialized distro meant for ETHICAL HACKERS and PENTESTERS. It never was intended to be a daily OS.

Quora answer: “Aside from “games”, does Windows 10 have any advantages over Linux these days?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

Aside from “games”, does Windows 10 have any advantages over Linux these days?

Answer:

========

You know, it really annoys me when people say that games are the only reason to keep Windows. That is simply not the case.

In fact, the amount of programs available for Windows surpasses that of Linux any day of the week.

Gaming is just a tiny part of the equation. We have to face it: Linux gaming performance is not that good. Mainly due to poor optimizations from graphics card vendors, but you can’t blame them. After all, why should they bother for an OS with such little user base and such little games?

Apart from gaming, there are lots of other applications in which Windows is just more practical than Linux.

When it comes to office suites, Microsoft Office is the king. It is the industry standard, and it is almost guaranteed that anybody you have to send a document to is using Microsoft Office. Can the same be said about LibreOffice?

When it comes to professional work such as design, video and audio editing, photography etc, Adobe’s software is the undisputed king. It is an industry standard and it is guaranteed that other people within the industry are using it. Can the same be said about GIMP, Krita, Inkspace, Kdenlive, RawTherapee, Audacity etc.?

Windows has other conveniences too, such as better hardware support than Linux, as well as better peripheral support. Also, you have the advantage of cloud services. How many cloud services work on Linux? Only Dropbox. Want to use Onedrive, Google Drive, or Adobe Creative Cloud? Yeah, you’re out of luck.

The list goes on and on but I think I will stop here.

Personally, for me the only strength in Linux is its command line, which is now available with the WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). I very rarely boot my Arch VM now. In fact, I haven’t booted it in the last month. I just find Windows much more easier to work with compared to Linux; it is much more faster and “just works”.

Quora answer: “A black screen like the Windows command line appears for less than a second and disappears. What is happening?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

A black screen like the Windows command line appears for less than a second and disappears. What is happening?

Answer:

========

I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

A lot of Windows processes upon startup open the cmd window for a second or so in order to execute scripts etc.

There was also a bug in Microsoft Office 365 (that has since been patched) that will open the cmd window every 1 hour or so. Maybe it is one of those issues.

What you should do is that when the cmd window opens, pay close attention to the title bar of the window. There should be a process / program name there, such as ‘xyzservice.exe’.

Monitor the processes opening cmd windows, and if you don’t recognize them as part of a program that you have installed, then Google for that process name. You will find information pertaining to that particular process. More often than not, it is simply a Windows service that activates upon startup.

Quora answer: “Is the Huawei P8 Lite slow?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

Is the Huawei P8 Lite slow?

Answer:

========

Having used the P8 Lite for a little over a year, it has developed a few downsides.

For one, the battery life has dropped. I previously used to get around 15 hours of usage on a single charge. With the same usage, these days I am getting only 5 hours at max. This is certainly disappointing and something worth noting if battery life matters to you.

Second, the software experience sucks. EMUI is really slow and chunky, and over the time, even a simple task such as opening Whatsapp or Facebook takes longer than it used to. I don’t think that this has to do with the hardware slowing down, this definitely is the software. I am not really happy with EMUI and I wish Huawe i would fix this. This is why the Google Pixel really appeals to me: the stock Android experience.

Third, if this matters to you, the build quality is a little on the cheap side. The phone is made out of plastic, although to Huawei’s credit, they have done a really good job of convincing a first-time user that it is aluminium. It doesn’t feel flimsy or cheap by any means, until it takes a fall that is. The coating that makes the strip around the side look like aluminium is really poor quality. I have a 3 year old brother and needless to say, my phone has suffered a few falls. Also, the phone has slipped my grip and has fallen onto surfaces such as tarmac, concrete, dirt, and stones. The screen held up surprisingly well, however that coating on the side has started to chip away, revealing the black plastic underneath. This doesn’t affect functionality, however if you care about build quality and aesthetics then keep this in mind.

So to conclude, over the last year my device has developed a few downsides, however I personally think that these are to be expected for a device at this price-point; albeit they could have done better on the software experience. But despite this, I still think that the Huawei P8 Lite is a fantastic budget phone and offers a better solution than most other manufacturers.

Quora answer: “Is Windows 10 better than Windows 7 and Windows 8?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

Is Windows 10 better than Windows 7 and Windows 8?

Answer:

========

Anything is better than Windows 8.

As for Windows 7, it is debatable. It depends on what your expectations are from an OS.

IME, Windows 10 is more stable than Windows 7 and 8. I have yet to experience a BSOD on my Windows 10 PC whereas with Windows 7 and 8, I have experienced at least 1 BSOD for no apparent reason. I was in the middle of my work and BAM!

Then there is the UX. Windows 8 sucked. The UI was horrible and there were so many inconsistencies it wasn’t even funny.

Windows 10 is definitely an improvement over Windows 8 and definitely looks more modern than 7, in terms of actual UX, Windows 7 still has the lead. Windows 10 still has some inconsistencies that affect usage. For example, having a different settings app and a control panel. So in terms of how consistent the UI is and the UX overall, Windows 7 has the lead there.

I see a lot of people complaining about privacy. Well, come fight me, but Windows 7 has as much telemetry as Windows 10. There is no way to be safe if you are connected to the internet.

Also, in terms of security, Windows Defender on Windows 10 is way, way more advanced than Defender on Win 8, and leap years ahead of MS Security Essentials on Win 7.

So, in everything else, Windows 10 is better than Windows 8 and 7, but in terms of UX and design consistency, Windows 7 has the lead over them both.

Quora answer: “What are the reasons why you should keep your laptop’s drivers updated?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

What are the reasons why you should keep your laptop’s drivers updated?

Answer:

========

There are a few reasons.

First, as the operating system updates itself, the hardware needs newer drivers to be able to interface with the operating system properly. If you don’t update your drivers, eventually many features of your hardware will stop working.

Second, many drivers contain security exploits as well as bugs, both of which are fixed with updates. There are often major bugs in drivers that don’t let your hardware function properly, and if you don’t update the drivers, they can do some pretty horrible stuff such as damaging the hardware itself.

Third, many driver updates come with new features that allow you to get more out of your hardware. These features include better optimizations, improved power efficiency, etc.

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons why you should keep your drivers up to date. Making sure your OS and drivers are up to date are one of the fundamentals in keeping your computer healthy. Don’t listen to any of the “anti-update squad” comments all over the internet claiming that they just “forgot about updates all together and their system works better” and blah blah. It just isn’t scientifically correct for any of that to be true.

Ironically, you actually have a virus.

Do a factory reset immediately, and be careful of your browsing habits in the future. Only stick to apps from the Play Store, don’t download all sorts of crap from the internet.

Quora answer: “Should I upgrade to Windows 10?”

Posted Leave a commentPosted in My Quora Answers

Question:

Should I upgrade to Windows 10?

Answer:

========

I would definitely recommend you upgrade to Windows 10.

It is a great improvement over Windows 8 and Windows 7. It has built-in security that actually works, and the new Edge browser is miles ahead of Internet Explorer.

There are a few inconsistencies that have been kept for legacy compatibility. For example, there is a different “Settings” app as well as a “Control Panel”. However, the team at Microsoft is doing a great job at improving Windows so I expect these inconsistencies to be fixed within a year or so.

You will get some answers about how Windows 10 has some privacy concerns. Well, first off you can disable a lot of the information sent to Microsoft, and personally I think that in the age of the internet, privacy is dead. Even the older Microsoft operating systems, such as Windows 7 and 8, were also sending information to Microsoft. Windows 10 will probably send just about as much information as Windows 7.

One last piece of advice is that if you do plan on upgrading to Windows 10, please ensure that you have at least 4GB RAM. Recommended 8GB if you want to be able to multitask and run everything smoothly.

Enjoy the journey to Windows 10!
