Aside from “games”, does Windows 10 have any advantages over Linux these days?
You know, it really annoys me when people say that games are the only reason to keep Windows. That is simply not the case.
In fact, the amount of programs available for Windows surpasses that of Linux any day of the week.
Gaming is just a tiny part of the equation. We have to face it: Linux gaming performance is not that good. Mainly due to poor optimizations from graphics card vendors, but you can’t blame them. After all, why should they bother for an OS with such little user base and such little games?
Apart from gaming, there are lots of other applications in which Windows is just more practical than Linux.
When it comes to office suites, Microsoft Office is the king. It is the industry standard, and it is almost guaranteed that anybody you have to send a document to is using Microsoft Office. Can the same be said about LibreOffice?
When it comes to professional work such as design, video and audio editing, photography etc, Adobe’s software is the undisputed king. It is an industry standard and it is guaranteed that other people within the industry are using it. Can the same be said about GIMP, Krita, Inkspace, Kdenlive, RawTherapee, Audacity etc.?
Windows has other conveniences too, such as better hardware support than Linux, as well as better peripheral support. Also, you have the advantage of cloud services. How many cloud services work on Linux? Only Dropbox. Want to use Onedrive, Google Drive, or Adobe Creative Cloud? Yeah, you’re out of luck.
The list goes on and on but I think I will stop here.
Personally, for me the only strength in Linux is its command line, which is now available with the WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). I very rarely boot my Arch VM now. In fact, I haven’t booted it in the last month. I just find Windows much more easier to work with compared to Linux; it is much more faster and “just works”.
